Bone Grafting Post-Operative Instructions

The following information applies when grafting material has been placed into extraction sites to help preserve your jawbone in preparation for possible implant replacement of the extracted tooth.  Care of your mouth after surgery has an important effect on healing. Swelling, discomfort, and restricted jaw function are expected and should not cause alarm. These may be minimized by following the instructions below. Please read them carefully. It is strongly urged that they be followed for optimum healing.

Your bone graft is made up of many particles. You may find some small granules in your mouth for the first several days, this is expected. It’s normal to have some of particles release from the surgical areas.

Do not disturb or touch the wound.

Avoid rinsing or spitting for 24 hours to allow blood clot and graft material stabilization.

Do not apply pressure with your tongue or fingers to the grafted area, as the material is movable during the initial healing.

Do not lift or pull on the lip to look at the sutures. This may cause damage to the surgical site.

Do not smoke, vape, or use tobacco of any type.

For mild discomfort, please follow your prescriptions/ directions given to you by Dr. Cracchiolo.

A soft food diet is recommended the day of surgery. Please see recommended soft foods list for examples. AVOID FOOD THAT IS VERY HARD OR CRUNCHY.

Do not brush over the surgical site. The day following surgery, you may brush the teeth adjacent to the site of the surgery. If prescribed, use the mouth rinse 1 time in the morning and 1 time in the evening. Use gentle swishing motions.

If a temporary appliance was given to you after the procedure, you may need adjustments during healing. Please bring your appliance with you to all post-operative appointments.

Please contact the office immediately if you notice the following:

  • Excessive swelling
  • Fever
  • Bad taste in the mouth
  • Excessive bleeding

Your overall health is our utmost concern. We anticipate a quick recovery and are available for you if any questions should arise.
